Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta
Five women members of Bellerive Yacht Club have formed the ‘Assailant’ team to contest the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta on Melbourne’s Port Phillip over the long weekend.
Judy Marshall will skipper the chartered boat of that name in the S80 one-design division of what is Australia’s largest keelboat regatta solely for women sailors. A record 40 teams from Australia and New Zealand have entered.
Joining her will be Sandy McManus, Cheryl Sward, Victoria Logan and 15-year-old Laila Grafton.
Two Tasmanian teams have entered the 2019 AWKR, the other headed by Derwent Sailing Squadron member Jo Breen and including women members of BYC, DSS and the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania. They will sail the Sydney 38 Chutzpah38 in the Open division.
Judy Marshall and Sandy McManus were members of a Tasmanian crew which won the S80 IRC division in 2017, sailing Recycled Recreation.
“Judy will be helm, Cheryl, Victoria and I will be trimmers and young Laila will be on the bow, a task she is already well experienced,” Sandy said yesterday. “We are all regular sailors out of Bellerive Yacht Club which has provided us with special t'shirts.”
The crew plan to pick up Assassin from Williamstown later today and have a day of practice sailing on Friday. Two races are planned each day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday for the Open and S80 divisions.

The Cyclades 43.3 designers got it right. This is a high-performing and seaworthy yacht that will perfectly suit experienced and beginner crews alike. An ideal cruiser in all respects. Easy to handle with twin wheels, simple rig, outstanding maneuverability and performance under sail (or motor). The huge cockpit with cushioned seats and folding table can be configured to provide complete shelter from the elements. Below deck, the saloon is spacious (headroom around 2 metres) and features an 8-seater dinette and a well-equipped galley. It is light, bright and well ventilated all enhanced by the teak fit-out. The three private double cabins each have an ensuite. "Milliebella" is in good condition and ready to go cruising.
The current owner has installed new equipment and carried out upgrades in 2017 and 2018.

Be sure to support these sponsors when possible.
Here we are at the 1/2 way point where 12 teams play & 6 get a break & the only certainty is the upsets will continue. The Cats are flying but the Tigers are trying, the Blues have a new coach but the Lions are in touch. North have won 2 but the Suns might be due. Crows & the Giants will both be on fire. Shirley says “Pies” while Peter says “My guys”.
Another tricky round - perhaps all the home teams will deliver meaning things from 2nd down will get even tighter.
