Sailing News

What a huge couple of weeks BYC sailors have had over the Christmas break and it’s not over yet.

The most notable event over the break was the 2020 TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Race. The fleet 31 yachts strong set off from beauty point on the 27th. 8 of the 31 yachts were BYC entrants, what an amazing effort. Some heavy weather in bass strait on the first night saw 5 disappointing retirements due to damage and crew sickness. Gladly no one got hurt and all 5 yachts returned safely back to port. For the rest of the fleet, they were in for a wild ride. I believe a few boats broke their maximum speed records, with most boats surfing around the 14-16knt mark and few even getting up to 22knts. This made for a very fast race around the top. Most yachts were either inside or just entering the Mercury Passage by night fall the following day. By daybreak it was a race across Storm Bay and up the Derwent for the majority of the fleet. Light winds were waiting for the sailors at the Iron Pot but Detail First skipper Scott Broadby managed to keep the boat slipping along to cross the line in 2 Days 37 Minutes and 14 Seconds, taking out overall 1st In IRC, PHS & AMS making him the overall winner of the L2H 2020. Congratulations to the Detail First Crew and Scott Broadby. Scott was not the only BYC boat collecting prizes,
Matthew Keal and the Heatwave Crew took out 2nd on PHS and AMS and 1st on IRC in division 1. Matthew also took 2nd overall on IRC. The Twitch syndicate found themselves on the podium with 3rd on PHS for overall and division 2. Twitch also took the City Of Hobart Trophy for the 1st yacht across the line under 10 metres.
We would also like to congratulate all BYC skippers and their crews that raced in the L2H 2020.

Ian Marshall -As Good As It Gets.
Peter Jenkins -Ultimate Challenge
Quest Syndicate -Quest
Jeff Cordell - B & G Advantage
Graham Mansfield - Black Magic
BYC would also like to thank The Derwent Sailing Squadron and Tamar Yacht Club for putting on such a fantastic event. It is a massive undertaking. Thank you.

Now To the upcoming week.

This Wednesday marks start of the Midweek Series 2 and the continuation of the Women’s Twilight series. There were some close battles fought out in Race 1 of the Women’s Twilight and we are looking forward to the action kicking off again. As usual there will be drinks and food at the club after the race. Hope to see you all there.

This Saturday BYC are hosting Race 6 of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series. This is a morning start and the weather is looking great, sunny and light to moderate winds from the east. Get your crew out of holiday mode and back into racing mode.

This Sunday BYC are hosting a race very close to our hearts, The Rockstar Roberts Memorial Pursuit Race. Tim Roberts was a much loved sailor and member of BYC for many years. John Nibbs from Nibbs Electrical has kindly sponsored this event in Tim’s memory. Post Race BYC will be presenting ‘SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY’ with the donations from the scrounges cup, along with live music and a sausage sizzle in the Marina Bar with all proceeds also been donated to ‘SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY’.

Please show your support for this event and enter online ASAP the weather is also looking great for this Sunday.
Thank you to the DSS for the images of the Crews in the L2H.
Cheers,
Mike Faure.
